Will turns practical skills into a business of his own

From caring for historic vehicles at Loxton Historical Village to growing Will’s Car Detailing, one local man is turning practical experience into opportunity.

For Will, a love of working with cars has become much more than an interest. It has opened the door to volunteering, new skills, stronger community connections and the development of his own local micro-enterprise.

Will began volunteering at Loxton Historical Village in August 2025 and quickly became a valued member of its large volunteer team. Each week, he helps detail historic cars and machinery, clean and maintain displays and rooms, move exhibits, and complete practical jobs that help keep the Village welcoming for visitors.

The role gives Will the opportunity to contribute to the preservation of local history while doing work he really enjoys. It has also helped him strengthen his communication, presentation and social skills, build confidence and gain practical experience relevant to his future employment interests in retail and labouring roles.

Will has received encouragement from Loxton Historical Village staff and his supervisor, Roselyn Sincock. Their support, together with his own enthusiasm and commitment, has helped him grow in confidence and capacity while making a meaningful contribution to the community.

The experience has complemented another important step in Will’s journey: establishing Will’s Car Detailing. Through the business, he provides car-detailing services to customers in his local community and is learning what it takes to operate a small enterprise.

Will has developed the practical knowledge and systems needed to operate his business professionally and make it easy for customers to use his services.

He has also created a Facebook business page, developed promotional flyers and business cards, advertised through local community forums and explored opportunities to work with businesses that operate vehicle fleets. Along the way, Will has learned more about budgeting, recording income and expenses, choosing quality products and equipment, and finding cost-effective suppliers.

Will’s Car Detailing is continuing to attract customers through regular promotion, community connections and positive word of mouth. He is proud of how far the business has come and the skills he has developed.

Riverland and Mallee Enterprises has supported Will with tailored mentoring and practical capacity-building as he works towards a sustainable business. The focus has been on supporting him make informed decisions and build the knowledge and confidence to take greater ownership of his enterprise.

From preserving the Riverland’s motoring history to building a business for the future, Will’s story shows what can happen when personal interests, practical experience and the right support come together.
