Jayden’s journey: from work experience to paid employment

For 18-year-old Jayden, the road to his first paid job was paved with determination, hard work, and a passion for all things automotive.

Known for his love of cars and mechanical work, Jayden had always envisioned a career in the automotive industry. His journey took an encouraging direction when he was offered a position as a trade assistant at Waikerie Crash, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in his life.

Jayden started out with work experience opportunities, facilitated by disability service provider Riverland & Mallee Enterprises, in and around Waikerie.

Through placements, Jayden’s passion and commitment flourished, opening the door to his first paid role.

With the mentorship of Kym and Shane at Waikerie Crash, Jayden quickly adapted to the industry’s expectations, tackling challenges with a keen eye and attention to detail.

These traits have been invaluable as he continues to make confident strides in his role.

With the support of Riverland & Mallee Enterprises’ Employment Assistance, Jayden reduced barriers and built the confidence needed to undertake work experience at Waikerie Crash.

Riverland & Mallee Enterprises’ support worker Simeon Craddock worked closely with Waikerie Crash management to showcase Jayden’s passion and potential, leading the team to offer him a permanent paid position.

Reflecting on this milestone, Jayden shared “I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to be at Waikerie Crash”.

“The job opportunity was a great relief and boost to my confidence,” he said.

“As this is my first job, there are many things I have to learn, but with time, these things will become second nature.”

As a trade assistant, Jayden has quickly become a vital part of the team.

For young people seeking to start their pathway from school to work, Jayden encourages persistence.

“Never give up and explore every opportunity that comes your way,” he said.

“Setting small, manageable goals and sticking to them really does help. Even something as simple as introducing yourself to a new workplace can do wonders for your self-confidence.”
